Description
Ammonium sulfate (NH4)2SO4(NH₄)₂SO₄(NH4)2SO4 is an inorganic salt commonly used as a nitrogen-rich fertilizer in agriculture. It appears as a white, odorless crystalline solid that is highly soluble in water but insoluble in alcohol or acetone. Containing about 21% nitrogen and 24% sulfur, it provides essential nutrients for plant growth, especially in alkaline soils, where it helps lower pH while supplying sulfur for protein synthesis. Beyond agriculture, ammonium sulfate is also used in water treatment, food processing (as a dough conditioner), and laboratory applications such as protein purification. It is generally stable under normal conditions but may release ammonia gas if heated strongly.
