Description
Sodium cyanide (NaCN) is a highly toxic, white crystalline solid with a faint, bitter almond-like odor. It is easily soluble in water, producing a strongly alkaline and poisonous solution that readily releases hydrogen cyanide gas upon contact with acids. Industrially, sodium cyanide is primarily used in the extraction of gold and silver from ores through the cyanidation process. It also serves as an intermediate in the production of chemicals such as cyanuric chloride and certain nitriles. Due to its extreme toxicity and potential use in chemical poisoning, sodium cyanide is strictly regulated, requiring careful handling, secure storage, and specialized protective measures.
