Description
Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol (polyol) commonly used as a sweetener and humectant in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic products. It occurs naturally in fruits such as apples, pears, and berries, and is also manufactured from glucose. Sorbitol has about 60% of the sweetness of sucrose but provides fewer calories, making it popular in sugar-free and reduced-calorie products. Beyond its sweetening properties, it helps retain moisture, improve texture, and stabilize formulations. In pharmaceuticals, sorbitol is used as a laxative and as an excipient in syrups, chewable tablets, and lozenges. While generally considered safe, excessive consumption may cause digestive discomfort, including bloating or diarrhea.
